Responsibilities
The incumbent will lead a department of about 50 people, including Ph.D. scientists and research associates (BS or MS training). Current departmental expertise includes pharmacokinetics, PK-PD modeling and simulations, biotransformation and xenobiotic transporter function and regulation.
The preferred location for this leader is Lawrenceville, NJ, with scientists in this department working in San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA, Cambridge, MA and Lawrenceville.
Lead scientific efforts to characterize metabolic fate and pharmacokinetic properties of drug candidates (small molecules, biologics, and novel modalities) to inform and direct lead optimization of drug candidates; proactively identify issues and enable investigative efforts that further enhance optimization of drug candidates
Encourage and facilitate research to advance new technologies and tools needed to develop screening strategies and/or refined approaches for drug disposition related issues
Represent Discovery Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics in strategic meetings and discussion with Discovery leadership to communicate potential liabilities and mitigation strategies
Engage in collaborative efforts with the scientific disciplines of the Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO) organization (other areas are toxicology, pharmaceutics and bioanalytical) to enable and develop broad-based strategies to advance programs into development.
Interface with the Nonclinical Disposition Assessment Department (development function) and other stakeholders to ensure effective transitions from discovery into development
Education/Experience
Ph.D. degree in any area of drug disposition, with emphasis on metabolism, pharmacokinetics or biochemical toxicology
At least 15 years of experience (industry, academia and/or government) in leading research efforts in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics; preference to scientists who are familiar with advancing candidates from drug discovery to development
Experience leading a sophisticated drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic function in the effective application of novel DMPK approaches to accelerate drug discovery
