The Business Development/Translational Medicine (TM) candidate will possess strong business acumen with experience in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry, particularly across technology platforms and pharmacodiagnostic tools. Expertise and prior experience in deal making process in the industry is required as the candidate will lead efforts in partnering/licensing of translational medicine related opportunities. The candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to facilitate highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects.
Key activities
Demonstrate leadership, scientific rigor, and business acumen while collaborating closely with R&D, Finance, and Commercial, and TM stakeholders and potential external partners.
Serve as thought partner in support of formulation of TM strategy while driving the execution of external business development elements.
Partner with the relevant TM disease area leads, on the delivery of business assessments and recommendations of external opportunities, including deal proposals, valuation, deal status, and key issues of the transaction to BMS governance bodies for endorsement.
Manage a team of TM BD transaction and search & evaluation directors and oversee deal process for TM opportunities from end to end.
Lead or oversee initial assessment of all inbound opportunities, as well as deep scientific and clinical due diligence with cross functional teams.
Lead or oversee negotiating partnerships and communicate key deal issues, risks, and updates to leadership and senior internal stakeholders, including collaborating with Transaction Legal in drafting and revising term sheet and contracts.
Lead participation in in BD external partnering events (JPM, BIO, BIO EU, BMS Partnering Days etc.) and technical / scientific meetings, including preparing materials such as presentations, FAQ and related documents.
Present to senior internal and external stakeholders.
Stay current and inform BMS stakeholders of competitive intelligence related to advances in pharmaceutical and diagnostic partnerships.
Support the communication with TM leadership team of key business development initiatives that impact TM deliverables.
Lead proactive external outreach in TM to identify and initially qualify partnering or acquisition opportunities fitting BMS BD priorities
Represent BMS to senior external stakeholders and collaborate with alliance management in managing and building relationships with key TM strategic partners.
Experience Desired
MD, PhD, PharmD, MBA, JD, or other advanced degree in the biomedical field preferred.
Minimum 10 years of experience within Pharma or Diagnostic industry and minimum of 7 years of relevant S&E or Transactions experience in leading significant numbers of closed deals in translational medicine (deal sheet required).
Proven ability to manage teams and coach team members' career development
Prior Pharma translational medicine or Diagnostic industry experience
Knowledge & Skills Desired
Strong working knowledge of pharmaceutical & diagnostic industry issues, trends, and their business impact.
Subject matter expert in - biomarker technologies and other translational medicine related collaboration opportunities.
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Able to communicate effectively with senior management internally and externally.
Competence in reviewing and editing contracts and providing direction to Legal in term sheets and contracts.
Ability to influence analysis undertaken by other functions.
Demonstrated strong negotiation skills.
Consistently delivers on commitments in a timely manner.
Works well with and exerts influence on multi-disciplinary teams. Facilitates candid dialogue and cross-functional collaboration.
